abatement notice

A notice served by the courts or by a local authority to abate a private nuisance or a statuory nuisance. For instance, a local authority has the power under the Highways Act 1980 to serve an abatement notice on the owner or occupier of land if trees on the land are a danger or obstruct the highway.
