Vegetation absorbs gaseous air pollutants, which include ozone, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide, largely by uptake through the stomata. Particulates settle on plant surfaces especially if the surfaces are rough, downy, glaucous or adhesive.
