ancient woodland (protection)

Ancient woodland is statutorily protected if within a statutory wildlife site (about 15% of the total), otherwise it is a material consideration in the planning system. Local authorities, when determining planning applications affecting ancient woodland, are expected to use the standing advice published jointly by Natural England and the Forestry Commission.
