bronze birch borer

(Agrilus anxius)

A wood borer, native to North America that infests birches. The Asian and European birches planted in North America are relatively susceptible and are generally killed. The bronze birch borer could be introduced to Britain in wood chips, which are being imported from North America in increasing quantities for biofuel, and it is therefore a potential alien invasive species.
