county farm

Farmland owned by local authorities, which came into being from the end of the 19thC to facilitate entry into farming and assisted in the re-settlement of servicemen returning from the two World Wars. In recent decades objectives have become more commercial, and since 1993 about a third of the farmland has been sold.
