cupboard door failure

A term introduced by Mattheck & Breloer (1994) for a form of structural failure which results in rotation about a hinge in the horizontal plane, as when the attachment of a branch subjected to a sideways force fails on the tension side to cause a split, which then opens like a cupboard door.
