spruce bark beetle

(Dendroctonus micans)

A pest mainly of spruces, first discovered in British forestry plantations in 1982. The beetle is native to Europe. It has been controlled by introducing a predatory beetle (Rhizophagus grandis) from the pest’s natural range, an example of biological control.
