demarcation line

In the cross-section of a decaying woody stem, a thin and relatively dark line. In three dimensions the line is a layer enclosing a volume of wood. The layer separates different colonies of decay fungi, infected wood from non-infected wood, or regions of active decay from other regions of the wood.
