European bison (wisent, Bison bonasus)

The heaviest surviving land animal native to Europe. It became extinct in southern England in the 12thC and in eastern Europe in the early 20thC, leaving a captive population descended from about seven animals. Since the 1950s the wisent has been reintroduced into reserves in several countries in central Europe, Spain and Denmark
