mitigation banking (ecosystem banking)
A practice in the US by which a developer gets permission to drain, fill or dredge a wetland or watercourse by buying credits from a mitigation banker, an agency that has undertaken to create, restore, enhance or preserve an equivalent wetland or watercourse.
