mouse-ear

A stage in the development of a top fruit flower bud in spring, when the bud has just broken open. The leaves subtending the flowers separate from the bud first and resemble mouse ears, while the flowers themselves remain tightly closed largely within the bud. Mouse-ear is after budbreak and before green cluster.
