oak pinhole borer (Platypus cylindrus)
A native wood borer and ambrosia beetle. The beetle was rare prior to the great storm in 1987 but numbers then increased and have not declined since. It only attacks dead or dying trees, including those of sweet chestnut and beech, and is a pest of trees felled for sawlogs.
