The process by which green tissues (containing chlorophyll) manufacture carbohydrate from carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air and water (H2O) from the soil, releasing oxygen, according to the generalized formula: CO2 + H2O = CH2O+ O2. The necessary energy is supplied by sunlight.
