root impedance

Roots extend through the soil through the soil pores (relatively easily in soil with coarse soil texture), channels left by soil fauna or pre-existing roots, or planes of weakness due to soil structure. The resistance of a soil to pressure (on a much larger scale than the root tip) is measured by a penetrometer.
