soil aeration

The movement of gases in soil, primarily by diffusion through the soil pore space. For example, oxygen diffuses from the atmosphere to the vicinity of plant roots while carbon dioxide diffuses in the opposite direction. The rate of diffusion is related to the proportion of the soil volume that contains air.
