soil erosion

The loss of soil from the surface of the land (with its deposition elsewhere). Strong winds can raise large quantities of dust when soil is dry, and soil may move down a slope owing to rainfall, run-off, freeze-thaw action, the habitual passage of animals or machinery, the burrowing of animals etc.
