A plant nutrient or, as sulpur dioxide (SO2), an atmospheric pollutant giving rise to acid rain or to a sulphate-containing (–SO42-) aerosol which causes global dimming. Sulphur is also the active ingredient of an inorganic fungicide permitted in the organic standard for top fruit.
