trade designation (selling name)

A name used for selling a taxon when the original cultivar epithet is considered unsuitable, for instance because it is a code or nonsense name or because it arose in a foreign language. Trade designations usually follow the cultivar epithet and should be printed in a typeface (ideally small capitals) that contrasts with the cultivar name, eg. apple ‘Cripps Pink’ PINK LADY.
