tree preservation order (prohibited actions)

Two categories of actions to trees protected by a tree preservation order (TPO) are prohibited without the prior consent of the local authority: to cut down, uproot or wilfully destroy a tree, or to wilfully damage, lop or top a tree in such a manner as to be likely to destroy it; or any damage to a tree (including its roots).

This definition is abridged from A – Z of tree terms: A companion to British arboriculture.
