triffid

‘A monstrous (fictional) stinging plant, mobile and rapidly multiplying, of invasive habit and malign intent.’ Triffids were invented by John Windham for his 1951 novel 'The day of the triffids'. Colloquially, a triffid is any plant that is overgrown and overbearing. In South Africa the alien invasive Chromolaena odorata (one of the world’s worst weeds) is known as the triffid weed.
