urban common

About 20% of the common land in England (most in rural areas) is defined as ‘urban common’. The public has free access to urban commons for ‘air and exercise’, interpreted in a High Court decision in 1998 to include horse riding (in contrast to access land).

This definition is abridged from A – Z of tree terms: A companion to British arboriculture.
