urban heat island (amelioration)
When it is too hot the adverse effects of the urban heat island can be limited or even reversed by elements of urban design, eg. building overhangs and covered footways. Elements of landscape design including shade trees, urban greenery, green space and bodies of water also have a marked effect. In cold climates the urban heat island may be beneficial.
