whitebeam
A genus of trees containing the natives whitebeam (S.aria), rowan or mountain ash (S.aucuparia) and wild service tree (S.torminalis). A group of species related to the whitebeam, including S.bristoliensis, S.eminens, S.subcuneata, S.vexans and S.wilmottiana, are found on limestone soils in the south-west of England and Wales. They are thought to have evolved since the last ice age and are Britain's only endemic tree species. They are also priority species.
