Wildfires occur naturally in climates that are sufficiently moist to allow fuel (dead wood, litter etc.) to build up, but also have dry seasons in which the fuel can be ignited by lightning, spontaneous combustion etc. Some wildfires are ground fires, the most intense are crown fires.
