growth rate

A term applying to the rate of increase of definable variables such as tree height, shoot length, stem diameter, wood volume etc. Growth rates vary naturally throughout a tree’s life cycle and can also vary markedly within a tree at one time (see die-back, epicormic shoot, water shoot).

This definition is abridged from A – Z of tree terms: A companion to British arboriculture.
