hazel

(Corylus avellana)

A common understorey species native to Britain, traditionally coppiced for rods in the coppice-with-standards silvicultural system. See hurdle. Many cultivars of hazel have also been selected for their heaviness of cropping and the size and flavour of the nut, including the cobnut and filberts.
