stumpery

A garden feature analogous to a rockery but created with tree stumps. The stumps are arranged in a shady place to be pleasing to the eye, sometimes with the root plate half buried to suggest windthrow. Stumperies were fashionable in Victorian gardens to display the exotic ferns recently introduced by the plant hunters.
